An Engraving of Paul's Shipwreck

| "The situation of the ship on the fifteenth morning," painted by H. Smartly, engraved by H. Adlard. From James Smith, The Voyage and Shipwreck of St. Paul (1880 edition), page 140. Note the anchor lines trailing behind the ship. These kept the ship from smashing onto the shore during the night. At daybreak, the crew raised a small foresail to give the ship maneuverability, raised the steering oars, then cut the anchor lines - hoping to run the ship aground. Here you see them in the process of raising the steering oars. Copyright © 2001 by Jefferson White |
